On Overturning of Roe v. Wade

CINCINNATI — Greg Landsman, Democratic nominee for Congress in OH-01, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Hobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning fifty years of precedent in Roe v. Wade

“Overturning Roe and Casey is an outrageous attack on the freedoms of millions of women and families. My opponent has made it his life’s work to take away the freedoms and privacies protected by Roe. Now, for the first time in history, the Supreme Court is taking away a constitutional right.”

Republicans locally are working to ban all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest. State Representative Jean Schmidt (R- Loveland) described rape as an “opportunity.” Ohio Republican Senate nominee JD Vance (R-Cincinnati) thinks rape is an “inconvenience.” Statehouse Republicans have also introduced a bounty hunter bill that allows individuals to take legal action against others who help someone get an abortion.

Congressman Chabot is even more extreme than his friends Vance and Schmidt. He has called the 1973 decision in Roe the most “wrong-headed” ever, worse than decisions upholding slavery and ‘separate but equal’. He even supports legislation that could throw women in jail for getting abortions and ban birth control or IVF. Make no mistake, Steve Chabot is out of touch with real people here at home. Women have a right to decide for themselves what is best for them – not politicians like Chabot, Schmidt, or Vance. All Americans deserve the freedom to make their own private healthcare decisions, especially after the violently evil crime of rape.

Landsman continued: “This is the time for action. The other side is hoping our outrage will turn into despair and hopelessness. We must codify the rights of Roe into federal law. We must fight to ensure our communities have the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions. And we must vote out-of-touch, anti-choice politicians like Chabot out of office.

The Court’s decision will cost lives, and it’s so clear that our work has never been more important. When I’m in Congress, I will never back down in the fight for the personal freedoms of all Americans and I will always oppose any efforts to undermine the privacy between a woman and her doctor.”
