Chabot & Schmidt Want to Ban Birth Control

CINCINNATI — Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to overturn fifty years of precedent in Roe v. Wade, Ohio Republicans are making their intentions clear. State Rep. Jean Schmidt (R - Loveland) is considering a ban on birth control in Ohio. Her former colleague Rep. Chabot has already cosponsored a bill in the House that would do the same.

Democratic Nominee in OH-01 Greg Landsman: “As women across the country lost their rights to bodily autonomy, Chabot finally achieved his goal. He’s made it his life’s work to ban abortion without exception for rape or the life of the mother. We are already seeing the consequences of this decision in Ohio, the state where a 10-year-old had to cross state lines to get an abortion after being raped. This is unfathomably dangerous, and local Republicans are only getting started.”

Congressman Chabot has a long legislative and personal history of working to ban abortion without exception. He has cosponsored many national abortion bans, and signed onto an amicus brief encouraging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe via Dobbs. He has called Roe v. Wade  the most “wrong-headed” decision ever, worse than decisions upholding slavery and “separate but equal” precedents. In the House Judiciary Committee, Chabot emphasized his belief that abortion is not healthcare (beginning at 56:50). Now, after boasting of his years and years of work to overturn Roe, he finally got his wish.

What’s next is clear. In the House, Chabot has cosponsored legislation to ban forms of birth control and IVF. Chabot’s friend and former colleague Jean Schmidt is considering offering legislation in the Statehouse to ban birth control in Ohio

In response to Chabot and Schmidt’s desire to ban birth control, Landsman says: “Our representatives want to control women and children. Banning abortion without exception is absolutely dangerous. Banning birth control is inexplicable. While Chabot serves in Congress, the families here at home are not safe. I will always vote to make sure every American has the right to make decisions about their own bodies. This government overreach has to end.”
